MATH NEWS

March-April 2008

 Spring Edition

Mrs. Antunes

Dear Parents and Students,

This school year is moving so quickly. We have covered many different aspects of math concepts so far this year. Most notably we have done considerable work with fractions.

I suggest you look for opportunities to use fractions at home. Some familiar places to find fractions are when cooking, shopping, building and  measuring.

The upcoming parent conferences are busy time and I may not be able to speak with you individually. If your child has a C or higher in my class, that is an acceptable grade. If I see any problems I will note them in the comments area of the report card.

We have standardized tests during the week of conferences. We have been working all year with the open ended type of questions. Basically the test is asking the student to explain their answer. This helps the person grading to differentiate between the student who is guessing and the student who understands. My suggestion is to have your child practice explaining their reasoning when they are solving problems. Talking through the problem step by step is excellent practice for when they have to write this type of answer.

The next page contains the curriculum overview for March and April. I have some helpful hints listed for these concepts.

The logic puzzle is done using process of elimination. Any student who turns in a copy of their completed puzzle will earn three bonus points.

                                                                                      Sincerely,

                                                                                      Mrs. Antunes
