This database lesson plan is designed for a fifth grade regular education mathematics classroom. The cognitive domain objectives are to incorporate data interpretation skills with mathematics open ended problem solving skills.
This is a continuation of a problem solving unit being used throughout the school year. The theme of the student as a Math Scene Investigator. This lesson would be used in May/June as a culminating activity to open ended math problem solving skills following completion of the preceding Web Quest.
General Objective-
The student will analyze data in the context of traveling.
Cognitive domain objectives-
The student will collect data with 90 percent accuracy.
The student will input data with 90 percent accuracy.
The student will make logical deductions interpreting data with 90 percent accuracy.
The student will use a database to analyze data with 90 percent accuracy.
Database Lesson Plan
Using the road trip data collected from the preceding Web Quest, the students are to further research their chosen destination. As time allows, they make choose a different destination using the Web Quest links. They will collect data on hotel options, local attractions, average temperatures, population range, etc. As an enrichment activity, the student(s) will design a pamphlet/brochure to advertise this location to others.
When all locations are submitted by the groups, the students will compare and contrast one of the more expensive places to visit with one of the least expensive. The students will write a complete paragraph explaining their comparison.
